"I'm your pillow queen. I'm your wildest dream and if I make you scream so much the better." Cub were a three piece all girl pop punk band from Vancouver. They were signed to local record label, Mint Records, home to Neko Case and the New Pornographers as well as her first band, Maow (see blog 7/26/10). Neko actually played drums with Cub on some of their earlier recordings. The two constant members in the band through the years were Lisa Marr and Robynn Iwata. Robynn's brother Randy is one of the co-founders of Mint Records. Lisa G was the drummer on their final release, Box Of Hair. The album got some distribution help from U.S. label, Lookout Records, which brought the girls to the attention of American audiences as well. They toured with bands like Sebadoh, Elliot Smith and They Might Be Giants. The latter actually recorded a cover of one of Cub's songs. The song, Pillow Queen, is a punchy two minute rocker from this 1996 release. The band would release a singles compilation entitled, Mauler, a year later before calling it quits. The members are still musically engaged yet not with each other. Lisa has released material as the Lisa Marr Experiment while Robynn is part of the multimedia project, I Am Spoonbender. You can purchase the album, Box Of Hair, on Itunes. Thanks for reading and enjoy!
