Artist: Solitair (feat. Saukrates & Michie Mee) Album: Drop The Beat Soundtrack, Song: Drop The Beat
Solitair is a producer and MC based in Toronto that started releasing material in the nineties. He had a few singles out on 12 inch with Beat Factory Records and he was also part of a collective called, The Circle, that included artists like Frankie Ano (aka Frankenstein), Thrust (see blog 2/15/11) and Jully Black. In later years, he would hook up Kardinal Offishall to form the Black Jays production team that achieved some notoriety when they released a remixed version of Jay Z's, The Black Album. Drop The Beat was a short lived CBC drama about some kids producing their own college radio show. The show emerged in 2000 and it's intention was to shine a spotlight on Toronto's growing hip hop scene. Phenomenal idea but the show didn't last. It did produce a soundtrack though that is very hard to find today and it featured a number of homegrown artists like Solitair. Solitair wrote and produced the title track and he is joined by fellow rappers, Saukrates and Michie Mee. Michie Mee actually starred as a character in the show. The soundtrack is likely out of print but there were copies trading on Ebay and Amazon between $10 and $50. Solitair recently released a R&B album under the name Silver and is nominated for a Juno this year. You can hear the song, Drop The Beat, on You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOjK84qT8Og). Thanks for reading and enjoy!
